BONNIE: MEET MIDNIGHT BLUE'S HEROINE, IN THE BOOK'S OWN WORDS. IF THIS STORY BELONGS TO ANYONE, IT'S HER:

Deep down inside Bonnie, in that place that daydreamed wildly about things that couldn’t really be, a jigsaw piece fitted into place.  Beyond the sky. All her life long, and though she’d never understood quite why, she’d known there was a land beyond the sky.  She’d wondered how to get to it and what it was like.  Beyond the sky.  Not ‘in outer space’ or ‘in another galaxy’ but beyond the sky – the way she’d always thought of it, as if it were possible to peel away the edge of the blue and pass straight through.

She’s gone, Arabella whispered.  ‘She’s gone away.  It’s all right now.  Oh, Bonnie, she’d have had us both if it wasn’t for you.  I’d never have had the courage to do what you did.  It was crazy, but you were so brave.  And it worked.  Oh Bonnie, Mum hated her.  She showed herself for what she really was, and now she’s gone and it’s all because of you.

Bonnie frowned.  She didn’t understand. She didn’t have a clue what Arabella was talking about.  All she knew about was the fall.  Everytime she closed her eyes, there it was…

Bonnie scrambled over the tangle of brambles in the cave’s mouth.  Got out her torch and flashed it into the darkness. Everything she was doing felt so unreal.  So dreamlike.  This couldn’t be her, could it, embarking on this crazy course of action?

‘I don’t want to, but I’ve got to,’ she said. ‘Will you come with me?’
