21st ANNIVERSARY
E-BOOK LAUNCH OF
MIDNIGHT BLUE

Welcome to my website - and to a celebration. Twenty-one years ago, my first novel, Midnight Blue,  won the Smarties Grand Prix Award.  It was an exciting time for me as an author, embarking on a new adventure.  Now I'm embarking on another new adventure, publishing Midnight Blue as an e-book for the next generation of young readers.

Twenty-one years ago, my writing career was launched by a troubled child called Bonnie, who ran away from home in a magic smoke-filled hot air balloon. Bonnie didn’t have much going for her in life, but she was very brave.  She made some terrible mistakes and paid a high price for them.  Nothing ever seemed to go her way, and even when she found what she was looking for she faced the prospect of having to give it up.

Find out more about Bonnie on the Midnight Blue page, where you will find articles on the writing of Midnight Blue and many of the strange things that influenced it. Find out about my other novels too. There's plenty to view here on this site, including my Blog and the journal of my jungle adventures in Belize for my latest book, the gap year novel, 'In the Trees'.

ALSO, FOR ONE WEEK ONLY, FROM CHRISTMAS TO NEW YEAR, look out for 'BEN THE BALLOON MAN', the short story I wrote nearly forty years ago, which first inspired the writing of Midnight Blue. I thought it was lost for ever, but recently I found it and I've just finished editing it to go on this website as a Christmas entertainment for all my book-friends.

REVIEWS FOR MIDNIGHT BLUE

'To my embarrassment, this book made me uncooperative and uncommunicative until I had finished it.  It certainly has an appeal far beyond the juvenile fantasy category.  It is intriguing, beautifully written and keeps the reader wondering until the very last page.  The suspense of disbelief is not merely willing, but eager; the fantasy becomes reality in one's ind, springing from that rich central core of England that gave us Elidor, Puck, Middle Earth and Watership Down.  This is fantasy at its best.' FICTION FOCUS

'Midnight Blue is about growing up, about self-knowledge, and about the redeeming power of love.  It's imaginative and magical.  And just a little bit scary.  What more could you want? ...Here's hoping this new edition gives this lovely and unforgettable book a whole new generation of readers.' JILL MURPHY,  BOOK BAG

‘Midnight Blue is one of the most exciting fantasies I’ve read for a long time.  Once I started, I couldn’t put it down. I especially admired the way the book showed the darkness within Bonnie as well as that without.  Her awareness of her own potential for evil, and her conquering it, is beautifully conveyed.’ Madeleine L’Engle

‘Pauline Fisk’s haunting and beautifully written Midnight Blue stands out as gold among the dross.  It’s a deeply satisfying, long read, complex and haunting and one of the year’s best imaginative novels. Midnight Blue is the kind of book that casts a life-long spell over the imagination.’  Susan Hill, The Sunday Times

'This not-quite-parallel world is full of quandaries that will leave the reader pondering.  A splendid fantasy.’ The Boston Herald
